Viewtiful Joe

One of Capcom’s newest games, Viewtiful Joe appears at first glance to be yet another average, side-scrolling, beat-em-up game, but it is much more than that. First of all, the screen turns as Joe moves throughout the levels, giving it a real, 3-D feel. The graphics are cel-shaded beautifully, with numerous background layers, and they appear realistic despite their cartoony feel.

The other great aspect of the game that sets it apart from others is that Joe (the hero, of course) has the ability to slow down and speed up time, as well as zoom in for powerful moves. You see, Joe’s adventure begins on a seemingly innocent date at the movies, when his girlfriend is snatched right out of her seat and pulled into the movie!

Joe chases after her, and finds himself confronted by his all-time favorite movie hero Captain Blue, who imbues Joe with special powers. When Joe slows down time he can slow down propellers, dodge bullets, and execute more powerful attacks. When he speeds it up, he can attack several opponents at a time, speed up propellers, and cause water to flow more quickly. With zoom he can stun weaker enemies, do twirling kicks, and do a powerful ground pound.

Overall, Viewtiful Joe is a great game, though it is lacking a little in the length and story department. We give this game a 4.5 out of 5 exclamation points.
